Lady Eagles softball stays on roll

The Coosa High softball team got the regular season off to a good start last weekend. Thursday, the Lady Eagles got region play off to a good start when they defeated hosting Chattooga 16-7 in a 7-AA matchup.

“I didn’t know we could hit as well as we’ve been doing,” Coosa coach Josh Agan said. “We’ve been doing all the little things right.”

During last weekend’s Model Lady Blue Devils Classic, the Lady Eagles scored 54 runs in five games. In one of those games, they we’re shut out.

In Thursday’s game, Holly Burnes threw four innings for the win, and Norie Cescutti pitched the remaining three.

Hannah Graham was 5-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and four runs scored, Angela Little was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Shelby Boyd hit twice and knocked in two runs and Burnes added two hits.

The Lady Eagles will next host Model on Tuesday in another region game.

Armuchee 4, Gordon Central 2

After a rough 1-5 start to the season, Armuchee got an important win. The Lady Indians defeated visiting Gordon Central in their first 7-AA game of the season.

Abby Monteith earned the win for Armuchee (2-5, 1-0), pitching four innings. Emily Wiggins threw the final three.

At the plate, Christina Nix had two hits, including a solo home run in the sixth inning to protect the win. Sam Hood added two hits, an RBI and a run scored for Armuchee.

Armuchee will host Calhoun on Tuesday for more region action.

Calhoun 5, Model 0

Maddie Monroe continued to be trouble for batters in Calhoun’s 7-AA contest against Model.

The Lady Yellow Jackets pitcher struck out 13 batters in their shutout against the Lady Blue Devils.

Jessica Chastain and Karavin Dew each had two RBIs for Calhoun (6-1, 1-0) and Bre Johnson had one RBI. All of Calhoun’s five hits were doubles.

The Lady Jackets will next play in Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe’s tournament today and Saturday.

Rockmart 11, Temple 0

Brandi Hughes earned the win on the mound for the Rockmart Lady Yellow Jackets as they defeated the hosting Temple Lady Tigers, in five innings in 7-AA play.

Rockmart’s Lacey Herring finished with two RBIs while Brittani Parks, Callie Bennett, Katie Kiser, Kellee Stone and Lindsey Wheeler all finished with an RBI each.

The Lady Jackets (6-2, 1-0) will travel to Gordon Central on Tuesday.

LaFayette 3, Rome 0

Rome High’s woes continued when the Lady Wolves traveled to LaFayette.

The Lady Ramblers shut out the 1-6 Lady Wolves and threw a no-hitter against them. Rome also struck out 12 times at the plate.

The Lady Wolves will play again Monday when they take on Pepperell.
